UK Financial Organisation Completes Strategic Active Directory Migration with ManagementStudio

The bank had been operating with two legacy domains for over 20 years, both of which needed to be migrated into a strategic domain. These domains encompassed 15,000 users and devices, along with hundreds of thousands of groups. The primary challenge was gaining a clear understanding of the existing landscape – how users, devices, groups, applications, and shared resources were interconnected – before cleansing and migrating the data.

Implementation

Two legacy Active Directory domains being consolidated into a single strategic domain is a major undertaking. The sheer volume of data associated with each domain account and user made it challenging to process and analyse, making it difficult to determine the necessary actions for each account. Initially, the bank considered managing the programme using in-house tools and spreadsheets. However, it soon became clear that the scale and complexity of the project required a more advanced solution to ensure efficiency and effectiveness. A solution that could seamlessly integrate data from multiple sources especially pulling a vast amount of data from Active Directory, provide extensive customisation, and remain accessible to users across the organisation was required.

Since ManagementStudio was already in use within the bank, it was chosen as the solution to analyse both domains, cleanse accounts and groups, generate reports, and automate key aspects of the migration process.

Benefits Delivered

ManagementStudio has delivered significant benefits, streamlining complex IT migrations and reducing manual effort. Key advantages included:

  • Automation & Efficiency – The platform automated critical processes, including application rationalisation, device allocation, and VDI-to-AVD migrations, minimising manual intervention and accelerating deployment timelines
  • Cost Savings – Through optimised device allocation and application rationalisation, unnecessary hardware and software costs were reduced, leading to substantial financial savings
  • Real-Time Visibility & Control – Live tracking of hardware, stock levels, and deployment progress provided stakeholders with complete visibility, enabling proactive decision-making
  • Seamless Integration – The solution was quickly installed, configured, and operationalised without disruption, thanks to a dedicated team of ManagementStudio consultants
  • Improved User Experience – Automated communications and structured migrations ensured a smooth transition for end users, minimising downtime and disruption
  • Scalability & Flexibility – The system’s adaptability allowed it to support large-scale transformations across multiple environments, handling high volumes of devices, applications, and users effortlessly.

Overall, ManagementStudio played a critical role in ensuring a smooth, cost-effective, and well-managed Active Directory migration.

Summary

Given the complexity of the bank’s legacy domain, gaining a clear view of the domains through data analysis was challenging. ManagementStudio transformed this process by enabling data cleansing, consolidating multiple data sources, and integrating advanced data mining capabilities, providing a comprehensive and accurate view of the environments.

“A centrally held and continually refreshed data set within ManagementStudio facilitates streamlined project execution by eliminating data silos and reducing the operational overhead associated with disparate data sources.”

Scope your application estate in minutes, not months

Application scoping has traditionally taken programme teams months of chasing owners, untangling vendor names and versions, and researching each app from scratch. This post explains how ManagementStudio’s ACE:AI standardises inventory data, recommends scope decisions based on customer precedent, and keeps the estate current through scheduled runs and the Application Owner tracker, long after the project ends.
